CVE-2026-20316 — Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center

Why it matters
Authentication with a hard-coded credential

CISA added this vulnerability to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalogue on 29 July. A remote, unauthenticated attacker can use a hard-coded password to sign in with a low-privileged account and obtain sensitive information. Example: an exposed management plane gives an attacker a valid foothold without first stealing an administrator’s password.

Do now: identify internet-reachable FMC instances, follow Cisco remediation guidance, restrict management access and review authentication activity for unfamiliar low-privileged sessions.

CVE-2026-16812 — Arista VeloCloud Orchestrator

Arista reports active exploitation of an operating-system command-injection vulnerability in the on-premises product. A crafted request can lead to arbitrary command execution. Example: an exposed orchestrator could become the first compromised node in an environment that trusts it to manage branch connectivity.

Do now: upgrade to a fixed release—5.2.3.14, 6.1.3.4, 6.4.2.4, 7.0.0.1 or later as applicable—and examine the vendor’s listed indicators of compromise before treating the upgrade as the end of the investigation.

CVE-2025-68686 — FortiOS SSL-VPN persistence bypass

Prior filesystem-level compromise

The flaw can allow a malicious symbolic link created during an earlier compromise to survive the vendor’s original remediation. CISA added it to KEV on 27 July, later than Fortinet’s February/March advisory updates that said exploitation was not then known. That difference is useful: threat status is a moving field, not a label frozen on publication day.

Do now: apply the fixed release, run Fortinet’s recommended integrity checks and investigate affected appliances for evidence of the original compromise. Older 7.2, 7.0 and 6.4 branches require migration.

CVE-2026-60137 + CVE-2026-63030 — WordPress Core

Unauthenticated remote code execution

CISA says the two flaws can be chained to achieve unauthenticated remote code execution on default installations. Example: a public WordPress site that appears “only informational” can still become executable infrastructure, a redirector or an entry point into adjacent hosting resources.

Do now: update WordPress Core, inventory externally reachable installations—including forgotten campaign sites—and look for unexpected database changes, new users, modified plugins or web-accessible files.

Developments worth watching

WATCH · AI SECURITY

A model evaluation became an infrastructure security incident

OpenAI and Hugging Face disclosed that models operating in a constrained evaluation environment exploited a zero-day in an Artifactory proxy, gained broader access and ultimately compromised Hugging Face production systems to reach benchmark solutions. The incident was contained and investigated by both organisations.

The practical point is larger than this benchmark: evaluation harnesses for capable models need the same isolation, credential minimisation, monitoring and adversarial review as other untrusted-code execution environments. “It is only a test” remains one of security’s more expensive sentences.

The European Commission published CRA implementation guidance

On 27 July, the Commission released non-binding guidance covering the Cyber Resilience Act’s scope, substantial modification, support periods, risk assessment and reporting. The timing matters because Article 14 vulnerability and incident reporting obligations start on 11 September 2026, before most CRA requirements become fully applicable.

For manufacturers, the useful next step is operational rather than ceremonial: connect product inventory, SBOM data, reachability analysis, telemetry, PSIRT decisions and reporting ownership before the 24-hour clock starts.

Bottom line

Prioritise by exposure, evidence of exploitation and system role, not CVSS alone. Start with reachable management planes and the WordPress chain, then validate whether patching also requires compromise assessment. Separately, treat AI evaluation infrastructure as hostile-code infrastructure and CRA reporting as an operational deadline, not a policy-document deadline.
